Global Warming

I got 83% correct, which is 10/12. I learned that Narwals are endangered because of the global warming.

Article 1: The world's smallest penguin may be in danger
Due to global warming, the smallest penguin has harder time trying to find food in the warmer oceans. These penguins are not used to the warm water, and their prey are not either, so the food for the penguins dimish, which in turn would starve the penguins.

Article 2: Crocodiles and Palm Trees in the Arctic
If the world heated up too much, the waters would get warmer. This would cause the world to revert back to 50 something million years ago, where palm trees grew in Alaska and crocodiles swam in the Arctic.

1. Some of the advantages of leasing areas of the ocean and banning fishing in those areas are that the population can grow faster, the population can have more genetic diversity, and the population can cycle through that certain area more than when there were fishing practices.
2. Some challenges in getting commercial fishing operations to change their practices are that there are a lot of people in these operations and chaning their habits are harder to implant, that the economics does not always go along with environmental sustainability and would create money changes in these operations, and that most of these operations are just looking for money and restricting areas would decrease their income.

Science Applied: how should we prioritize the protection of species diversity

Free Response Question:

A. One reason that the Florida Reef is not recognized as a hotspot is because there is not enough biodiversity in the plants and the animals that live there. Also because of the coral bleaching, the Florida Reef is not a hotspot for fish or plants to live there.

B. One ecosystem that the Florida Reef provides is a living space for fish and other animals to live in and to survive in. Another ecosystem that the Florida Reef is that it provides oxygen for our environment to counteract the carbon dioxide.

C. Coral bleaching is internal algae loss of corals, which cause the corals to become a white color.

D. If hurricanes help ecosystems maintain diversity, then the more diversity there is in that ceratin ecosystem, but if there are too many massive hurricanes, then the coral reef that is being impacted could risk local extinciton.

Blog Entry 1: Golf course

I think having a sustainable golf course is important because it takes up so much land. A lot of this land could be used for something more sustainable, such as growing a small forest. This is better for the environment. Even though people want to go golfing, I think that they should only go to the golf courses that are environmentally friendly. I can see this happening all over the world and the more golf courses that are environmentally friendly then it is better for the environment and people too. I believe that golf courses are not needed. People tear down a lot of forests to make a golf course, even though it is not important for some people. If a golf course is needed, than ACSP is doing a good job at keeping the environment clean of a lot of pesticides from these golf courses. I believe that people could save more water than 7 million liters of water per year. A lot of water that is being used in these places could be used for other purposes, such as providing clean water for people that need it.
